The Skin's Fine Lines and Wrinkles
Did you know that there are different kinds of fine lines and wrinkles? No, boys and girls, we don't get to contend with just one type of wrinkle, we have three different versions. If you've ever wondered why there are so many anti wrinkle creams, treatments, and cosmetic surgery options on the market, this is why.
The skin, being the body's largest organ, is prone to aging just like the rest of systems are. If you recall from science class, there are three layers to the skin. The deepest layer is known as the hypodermis. This layer is primarily made up of fat. Don't worry it's the good kind. It helps keep the skin looking plump and attractive. Right above it dwells the dermis. This one is where we keep our collagen and other fibers. The skin's elasticity and strength come from this layer. We are all familiar with the top layer called the epidermis. This layer is important, as it is responsible for regenerating the cells of the visible part of your skin. Obviously it needs to be kept healthy to ensure its appearance and softness.
Now the question is what happens to these layers that causes the appearance of wrinkles and other age telling signs. In a nutshell, everything ages. The epidermis can no longer produce new, healthy cells like it once did, and the dermis' elastic fibers and collagen begins to break down. The skin also loses its ability to repair itself and becomes drier and stiffer with age. The result is wrinkles and sagging of the facial skin.
With our question of how wrinkles happen in the first place, it's time to discuss the three types of wrinkles. Medically known as rhytids, the severity defines which category the fine lines fall into. The troublesome fine lines on the epidermis are the most common kind of wrinkle. The lines that appear to be a little deeper extend into the dermis. They are harder to treat and are definitely more difficult to disguise. The really deep wrinkles, sometimes called folds or furrows, affect the skin to its deepest level. Some common treatments for wrinkles follow.
- Anti wrinkle creams
- Botox and collagen fillers
- Chemical peel
- Laser resurfacing
- Alpha hydroxy acids
