Understanding Wrinkle, Skin Aging
In order to understand how the skin ages and the appearance of wrinkles, skin and its various layers need to be explored. Having a grasp on the dynamics at play in the skin and what each layer does may not stop wrinkles from forming, but it will help a person determine what they need to do to stop or reduce the effects of aging in their skin. So, to go back to high school science class, let's review the makeup and functions of the skin layers.
- Epidermis
- Dermis
- Subcutaneous tissue
The outer most layer of the skin, or the part that is visible, is the epidermis. As the healthy cells of the skin are damaged or die, they are replaced by the new cells underneath. The epidermis is also the part of the skin that protects the underlying layers and muscle tissue. The fine lines and wrinkles show up on this layer. However as we see later, those blemishes aren't just the problem of the epidermis, the other layers are affected as well.
The dermis layer of the skin sits just below the epidermis. It is here that collagen and other connective tissues live. As we age, this layer begins to lose its ability to produce collagen. That is when visible signs of sagging skin and wrinkles become apparent. When skin is young and healthy the collagen is what creates the firm, supple appearance. Another interesting aspect of the dermis is the dermal-epidermal junction. This structure within the skin is responsible for providing nutrients, blood, and oxygen to the epidermis.
The subcutaneous tissue's role is short and sweet, but also vitally important. This layer is primarily made up of fat. It plumps up the skin giving it that full appearance. As we age, this layer naturally breaks down and the resilience of the skin is lessened. Besides, existing to enhance the look and feel of the skin, it also provides a layer of insulation between our environment and our bodies.
While it is a general understanding of the makeup of the skin, this description helps clear up the misconception that wrinkles and fine lines are only the problem of the epidermis. In truth the aging of the dermis and subcutaneous tissue is more the reason for those unwanted signs of aging.
Once there is an understanding of a wrinkle, skin can be treated to improve the quality of its look and feel. Aging wrinkles don't have to be just a part of life, there are anti wrinkle treatments, such as Skin So Silky, that have been proven to be very effective.
