Black Skin Care Problems Are No Different
There are no black skin care problems that require specialized products or treatments to cure. Basically, skin is skin no matter what color it happens to be. People of every color and creed have problems with acne, dryness, excess oil, and sensitive skin. There are no specialized skin centers focusing on care for one race, creed, or culture. Skin care lotions, moisturizers, and creams are developed based upon skin type-not color.
However, this is not to say that there are not special properties which make African American skin unique. Skin pigment is actually determined by melanin and melanosomes are the unique cells where it is found. Because African American skin is darker than other cultures, it has more melanin and larger melanosomes. This is both a blessing and a curse where African American skin care is concerned.
Antiaging skin care products are not as big of a necessity as they are for people with lighter skin and smaller melanosomes. In any skin type or color, the sun's UV rays penetrate into the skin and damage the collagen and elastin fibers that support the outer layer. When these supportive tissues break down, the area above them sinks in and is then lower than the surrounding skin-hence the birth of a wrinkle and the immediate need for a facial skin care cream!
Melanin provides the body with a natural defense against the UV radiation of the sun. Larger melanosomes and more melanin means a greater defense against UV rays and less of a need for skin care for wrinkles or sun block. Indeed, African American skin is better suited to resist sunlight and resist the effects of extrinsic aging.
While no specialized African American skin care products are actually required, the fact is that larger melanosomes do create special needs due to hyper-pigmentation. This is a very common skin problem caused by an inflammation of the melanosomes. Scars, bruises, and recent cuts or scrapes will all inflame the melanosomes. When this happens, the inflamed area becomes darker than the surrounding skin and may stay this way for months or even years at a time.
There are specialized products designed to help with this condition but any organic skin care product made with lemon or lime oil will help with the problem. These ingredients are essential oils and they will help lighten the area while also nourishing the skin and melanosomes from within. Essential oils are plant extracts and many contain beneficial "living nutrients" that are used in a number of medical applications. Those best suited for skin care solutions are rich in essential fatty acids and antioxidants.
