Are African American Skin Care Products Even Necessary?
The idea of there being specially created and formulated African American skin care products may seem somewhat confusing to most of us. After all, aren't all skin problems basically universal? Why would there need to be entire skin care lines created when we all pretty much have the same skin and conditions? The most common and simple skin care issues facing people of every race and color include:
- Excess oil and/or acne
- Dryness
- Premature formation of fine lines and wrinkles
- Dermatitis
- Psoriasis
- Sensitive skin outbreaks
However, while many of us are familiar with the conditions listed above, most of us would scratch our heads if asked where to find the best skin care solutions for a condition common in African Americans known as hyperpigmentation. The primary skin care ingredient in any remedy for this condition is some form of bleaching agent because the main symptom is the appearance of darkened areas of skin that remain darker for months, even years at a time.
The darkened areas of skin inherent to hyperpigmentation are caused by an inflammation of the melanosomes. The skin pigment melanin (which helps protect us against the damaging effects caused by the UV radiation emitted by the sun) is located on the melanosomes. Skin care treatments for hyperpigmentation are necessary when the melanosomes become inflamed by any of the following:
- Cuts
- Scrapes
- Bruises
- Acne scars
Hydroquinone was commonly used in hyperpigmentation skin care solutions and proved very effective in lightening the affected areas and reducing social embarrassment associated with the condition. However, hydroquinone has been linked with a number of problems including leukemia. While there is no conclusive skin care information that positively proves the link, many products are now made with safer alternatives, including:
- Kojic acid
- Lemon oil
- Lime oil
- Azaleic acid
Kojic acid is a less effective skin care solution for problems with hyperpigmentation but it will block the formation of melanin and thus lighten the affected areas. However, active ingredients like Lemon or Lime oil will not only reduce the visible appearance of the hyperpigmentation-they are also loaded with other beneficial nutrients that can actually lower the odds of future problems with dark spots occurring. The most effective skin care remedy is not the one that merely treats symptoms-but the one that actually prevents them from returning in the future.
While anti aging natural skin care is nearly universal, the larger melanin content in African American skin makes hyperpigmentation a more unique issue for those with larger melanosomes (in both Asians and African Americans).
While we all have conditions that are common to all, African American skin care products have been designed to help with issues more specific to those with larger melanosomes.
