Is Skin Care For a Man Any Different Than For a Woman?
Whether intentional or not, it would appear that skin care for a man is almost non-existent if the packaging and labels used on products are the indication. But, just like women, men are prone to excess oil, acne, dryness and other problems that require skin care treatment. Thus, there really should be no need for special skin care systems for men but there are some subtle differences that do make it necessary to do some research before making a purchase.
One of the biggest differences between men and women is their hormones and they are responsible for controlling the sebaceous glands. These glands are very important for any type of skin care because they are responsible for producing the oil used to protect the skin and help it retain moisture. Any fluctuation in hormone levels could cause an increase or decrease in oil production making dry or oily skin care products necessary. Typical periods of hormone fluctuation include:
- Pregnancy
- Puberty
- Menopause
- While using birth control
Skin care for men is typically less complicated because of fewer problems with hormone fluctuation. Women usually need dry skin products before men because oil production tends to decrease dramatically during menopause. While men will eventually need some sort of skin care moisturizer because of a gradual slowing of sebum production, it usually comes at a later age than for women.
However, the body will eventually start to repair and regenerate itself at a slower rate. Wrinkles will begin to appear because the elastin fibers and collagen network supporting skin will collapse and cause the skin above to sink lower than the surrounding tissue. Eventually, we all need a beauty or skin care product to help the skin retain moisture and the lotion is the most common remedy people buy.
The problem with a lotion is that it is an oily chemical suspended by water and alcohol. Skin care lotions are popular because they are inexpensive and don't leave you feeling greasy after use. Chemicals and synthetic ingredients may make discount skin care products cheaper and more available, but they may also be considered toxic by your body. Increased toxins increases the use of water and causes dehydration so any skin care remedy made with chemicals and unnatural ingredients may be causing dryness rather than alleviating it.
You want to find skin care moisturizers, creams, and ointments made from all natural ingredients. Organic and all natural ingredients are much less apt to cause side effects like dehydration or rashes than those products made with laboratory concoctions. While there is little difference between skin care for a man and a women aside from the time when hormones fluctuate, it is important to only buy products made from organic ingredients to avoid problems with dehydration and increased toxin levels.
