Not All Oil Dry Skin Products Are The Same
Oil dry skin products use natural and synthetic oils to give creams and lotions rich moisturizing power. However, not all oil-based products are the same. There are petroleum-based products, plant-based products, and natural product with hydrogenated plant oils. How is one to figure out which is the best lotion or cream for your skin?
First off, the difference between a lotion and a cream is merely the water to fat ratio. The more water in an oil dry skin product, the more likelihood it will be sold as a lotion and not a cream. The fat in these products can be just about anything from natural or cooking oils to petroleum-based products like mineral oil. The water itself is not what moisturizes the skin. It's the fat that you use and how well that fat is able to be absorbed into the skin. If your skin is only moderately dry, you may opt for a lotion thinking it is less oily, but in fact, it may have more hydrating power than a cream, depending on the oils and fats being used.
Another factor that is different between moisturizing products is how the products work. Some work by going deep into the sub layers of the skin and hydrating it from the inside out. Others work by simply adding a layer of moisture to the top of the skin and creating a barrier to moisture loss, without adding much additional moisture to the underlying layers of the skin. Natural oil products tend to work deep in the skin while artificial products tend to lie on the surface of the skin and create a moisture barrier.
The only time this isn't the case is when natural oil has been hydrogenated to thicken it into a cream. Hydrogenated oils are oils that have been processed to make them be more solid at room temperature. A good example of hydrogenated natural oil is margarine. Hydrogenated oils are suspected of causing cancer and skin problems. Thus, even though a product claims to be made from natural oils, it simply isn't the same as a product that is in liquid form.
