Is A Thick Cream For Dry Skin Better?

If you have very dry skin, you may think that a thick cream is better than a lotion. This is not necessarily true. Although the consistency of a lotion may seem to signal great potential to hydrate the skin, the reverse can actually be true. It's not how much grease gets on your skin that is important, it's how much your skin will absorb that's important. So, although heavy creams made from petroleum-based products look and feel great, they may not necessarily be as good as natural oil products which can be soaked up the skin more easily.

You may be wondering what makes a skin cream so thick. It is the proportion of fat to water that typically makes a cream skin thick. The more water a product has the more it might be considered a lotion instead of a cream for dry skin. Many of today's creams get their fat content from petroleum-based ingredients like petrolatum, the ingredient in Vaseline. These types of fats cover the skin giving it a well-moisturized look but don't sink in deeply and don't allow the skin to breathe either. In addition to this type of "fat" other petroleum-based ingredients like sodium lauryl sulfate are added as a foamer to make them look even thicker. It's well known that sodium lauryl sulfate is a detergent that strips the skin of moisture. So, you would have to continue to use the product over and over in order to feel as if your hands were actually hydrated.

Sticking with the natural fats is a better approach. You can still have a thick cream and use natural fats like cocoa butter, lanolin, and shea butter. Beeswax is also a natural product that can thicken a cream for dry skin and also provide a protective coating to the skin against environmental stressors like, harsh dry weather. Along with these oils, many natural product manufacturers use almond, olive, or avocado oils to help add moisturizing ingredients to the mix.

However, a thick cream isn't essential to treat the following conditions:

  • Chronic dry skin
  • Rash dry skin
  • Severely dry skin

The oils in the cold creams can also be used alone, without the beeswax or the lanolin. Products like Skin So Silky are simple but elegant solution that offers advantages over a petroleum-based cream for dry skin. It is all natural and is easily absorbed into the skin. It only requires an application of a few drops a couple of times a day to help alleviate even the driest of skin and it also can be used on a face with acne. The addition of lemon oil to the mix can help it to treat dry skin and acne, all at the same time.
