Specialized African American
Skin Care

African American skin care is very unique, but many people try to say that we are all the same and skin is skin. But the truth is, ALL skin is different.  African American or Caucasian skin can be sensitive, thick, dry, oily and even a combination of these.  Another obvious difference is that the different colors of the skin causes different reactions with the outside environment.  So whether you are African American, Caucasian, Hispanic, etc. you need to be aware of your skin conditions and how to manage them.

With all the different skin types come many skin disorders.  A common one for almost all people is acne. Again, African American skin is unique so it shows acne differently because of the darker complexion.  Treating acne as well as other skin disorders can be frustrating, and if not treated properly can cause more harm than good.   Some helpful tips for fighting back against common skin disorders are as follows:

  • When using a cleanser, do not scrub your face.  Lather and then rinse off.
  • When taking a shower, do not make the water really hot because the heat can strip your skin of its natural oils.
  • Make sure you are using skin care products that are sensitive to your skin’s needs.
  • A step further would be to use an all natural product on your skin because petroleum/ chemical based products can be very harmful over a long period of time.

African American skin has larger melanosomes (cells that determine skin color) and the melanosomes contain more of the pigment melanin than those found in white skin. Because of the protective effect of melanin, African-Americans are better protected against skin cancer and premature wrinkling from sun exposure.

A down side to theses melanosomes are that they tend to become more easily inflamed among African Americans.  The skin will then appear to have dark spots from the inflammation, and this inflammation can be caused by a cut, acne scars, bruises, or even scrapes.  Dark spots usually take a long time to fade and become less noticeable.   There are bleaching agents out there to help but may cause long term effects to the skin.  Be very careful of any and all treatments because not all skin is the same. Also, be sure protect yourself from unneeded chemicals by sticking with all natural skin care products. Your skin will thank you later.
